Drink of the Day: Snow Bird Cocktail

December 12, 2014 | By | 1 Comment

Happy Friday!  The weekend is upon us and there is now less than two weeks to go out and get that holiday shopping done.  Oh, what fun!  Here’s something to reward yourself with after the day’s worth of waiting in line at the store.

I had the opportunity to try out three different spirits from TOPO Distillery located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  The cocktail that I came up with is made using their vodka.  Suzanne and C.R. Morris were nice enough to be my guinea pigs during the tasting of all three spirits.  When it was all said and done, we all agree that this cocktail was the best out of the ones we had the opportunity to come up with.

There is nothing better than using fresh ingredients when making cocktails.  Yes, it takes more time than if you were to use the flavored washes you can buy at the store.  However, your labor will be well worth it once you taste the difference.  I think you’ll agree once you take the first sip.

The reason why we called this the “Snow Bird” is that it is a perfect drink for those of us unfortunate souls who have to tolerate yet another cold winter.  The fruity freshness of this vodka / coconut rum combination will have you thinking of warm waters and sandy beaches.  So, let’s just close our eyes and enjoy each savory sip.

Hope your weekend is filled with warm thoughts and enjoyable moments.  Cheers!FullSizeRender (5)

Snow Bird Cocktail

2 Chunks of Pineapple

3 Strawberries quartered

1 1/2 oz. TOPO Vodka

1/2 oz. Malibu Coconut Rum

Ginger Ale

Method:  Put the pineapple chunks and quartered strawberries in a mixing glass.  Add the vodka to the mixing glass with the fruit.  With the grooved side of the muddle, pulverize the ingredients until you feel you have a good mash.  Add ice.  Cap with a tin and shake vigorously.  Strain into a 14 oz. glass filled with ice, (we used a goblet).  Fill the glass with ginger ale, leaving room to float the coconut rum.  Add a fresh strawberry and a lime half-wheel for garnish.

P.S. – Better photos will be soon on all these TOPO drinks….PROMISE!
