Drink of the Day: Twiisted Irish Coffee

October 7, 2015 | By | Add a Comment

The change from warm to cold temperatures are very obvious here in the Midwest.  Our pools close for the upcoming season, we winterize our cars for the brutal weather ahead, a new football season gets underway, etc.  I also know because I am asked to put together some coffee cocktails for the winter menu.

Here is one that will seem somewhat familiar.  But, it has a “twist” to it to make it a little different.  It brings a little more to the table than the original.  Adding a little Irish cream and dark Creme de Menthe puts an exclamation point on an already popular coffee drink.  I’ve been making this cocktail this way since working at a place in downtown Akron called “Mr. Bilbo’s” in the late 80s, where it was a patron favorite many years before I started there.  It has also been a house specialty at Ray’s Place in Kent and the new Fairlawn location; just giving credit where credit is due.  A great warmer upper, I am sure you will enjoy the added elements to one of the most popular coffee drinks for many generations.

With the chilly evenings, it is nice to have something to comfort you that goes well with your flannel jammies and slippers while watching the fire do it’s memorizing dance.  I hope you find this to be a tasty partner.  Enjoy your evening a little more with this minty beverage I’m sure you will be having more than one of while winding down your busy and rewarding day.

Cheers!

1 oz. Irish Whisky

1/2 oz. Bailey’s Irish Cream

Coffee

Whipped Cream

About a 1/2 oz. Creme de Menthe

Method:  Pour the first two ingredients, to measure, in an Irish coffee mug.  Fill to about a half-inch from the rim with hot coffee.  Lay two stir sticks across the top of the mug, forming a “v”.  Holding onto the straws where they meet, put on the whipped cream.  The straws will help keep the whipped cream in place.  Slowly pour the green Creme de Menthe on top of the whipped cream.
