It has been the general rule with today’s bar schools to concentrate more on memorizing drinks and the history behind them, then what is truly the most essential part on the education of what a bartender is. In my book, “Extra Dry, with a Twist: An Insider’s Guide to Bartending.” I wanted to give a clearer view to the new generation of bartenders; the true glance on what to expect and what is expected from those who work on the other side. Though I see these topics of discussion as common sense points, due to the timeframe I came into the industry, I am finding that these points have become quite rare.
With the one-day seminars I have put together, I share with this new generation the true meanings of what a true bartender is. If you talk to a bartender with over ten years experience, you will learn that most of the ones who do the hiring at their establishments will not hire people who have come from these two week bar schools. This is usually because they have been trained to only make drinks one particular way, and that all the other ways are wrong. As a bartender, you will find that most people are unaware of the right ways of making drinks and have become accustomed to having the drinks the way they, themselves, like to have them. Also, there is much more work involved then making the drinks for your customers. You also have to know how to multitask, be a team player, and learn some of the other fundamentals to do the job properly and prosperously for the establishment you work for and yourself.
