The Gettysburg Address is July 3rd Drink of the Day!!
On this day in 1863, the battle that would be considered the turning point to the Civil War, would end. The Battle of Gettysburg would only last three days, with Confederate forces running very low on ammunition, they would retreat and this battle seemed to take the life out of the Confederate Army. Three and a half months later, President Lincoln would give his two minute speach which is still, to this day, considered one of the best speaches ever given. By April the following year, General Lee would surrender his Army in Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia. Less than one week later, President Lincoln would be shot at Ford Theater. His Address would stand the test of time.
To remember this Battle, what better way to do it than to introduce a drink named after the speach that Mr. Lincoln would help solidify this battle as being the one that would make this country one again.
This drink was made by Chef Andrew Lanier. As he introduces the ingredients, he wanted to combine a southern ingredient, (bourbon), with a northern ingredient, (maple syrup). This is a simple, yet flavorful combination that seems to soothe the bourbon bite. I’ll let you be the judge of that.
The Gettysburg Address
2 oz. Bourbon Whiskey
1/2 oz. Maple Syrup
Dash of Angostura Bitters
Sage Leaf (for essence after making drink)
Method: In a shaker glass with ice, add the ingredients. Stir well, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Take the sage leaf and rub it on the rim of the cocktail glass.
