Airmail is May 15th Drink of the Day!!

Where would we be without next-day airmail? In most of our minds today, we must have something yesterday and will pay that something extra to get it to us quicker. Without the luxury of this service, we wouldn’t have this option. In 1918, regular airmail service got underway, with daily flights flying from New York City to Washington D.C., with a stop in Philidelphia. You can say that this is the day the chaos began.

Most of you that’ll be reading this remember when we didn’t have the luxury of the thing I’m in front of right now. I remember going on business trips with a roll of quarters in my pocket for those, “Just-in-case emergencies”. I also remember when people would call and leave you a message, they would expect it to take you a few days to get back to them, because they knew you probably wouldn’t be getting the message until then, due to being out of the office on a business trip.

How times have changed…..

Well, enough of my banter!!! To put it into perspective, Airmail service is a multi-billion dollar industry. With on-line stores and drop shipping, there seems there will be no slowing down anytime soon. Though letters have become replaced by email and video phone, merchandise sales has kept it a booming industry.

Here’s a drink I found, a blog posted by Bob Stafford on theDrinkingTime.com blog page, that bears the name of what I’m talking about. As he mentions in his write-up, there are many recipes for this drink out there. However, the two base ingredients do not change, (champagne and rum). This one, I felt was worthy of the Drink of the Day title.

Airmail
1 1/2 oz. Rhum Agricole (Agricultural Rum. Meaning: Rum made from pure cane sugar and not molasses).
1 oz. Honey Syrup (1 part honey : 2 parts water)
1//2 oz. Fresh Lime Juice (make sure to use fresh and not “sweetened” lime juice)
1 oz. Champagne
2 - 3 drops Angostura Bitters

Method: Pour the rum, lime juice and honey syrup into a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Pour in the champagne. Drop two to three drops of angostura bitters on top of drink. Take a mint leaf and drag it through the bitters, making a design in the drink. Place the mint leaf on the edge of glass for garnish when you’re done.
