The Alexander is March 20th Drink of the Day!!
This is the original of the Alexander cocktails, which dates back to the early 1900′s. As we have with most cocktails in this era, there are several people who have been credited for being the originator of this drink. The story I like best is that it originated in Philadelphia and was made in honor of Philly’s pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander. The story showed in the Philadelphia Inquirer on October 3, 2015 and was made for the World Series, where Boston was playing Philadelphia. Boston would end up winning the series, but a classic cocktail would be born.
Many of you are familiar with the Brandy Alexander, which was created for Princess Mary and Viscount Lascelles in 1922, (again, this is one of several supposed origins of this). No matter where the latter drink came from, it was the original Alexander where this drink derived from.
Well, no matter where the Alexander originated, this is a nice and creamy gin cocktail that is a great representation of pre-Prohibition creations. Most of you have probably tried the Brandy variety of these, but do yourself a favor and give the gin variety a try. You will be happy you did. Equal parts of gin, creme de cacao, and cream make for a nice dessert beverage that will complete that fine meal. Enjoy!
