Today is John Glenn, Jr’s birthday. We all know him as the first astronaut to orbit the earth in space. Did you know that he also was the oldest person to ever be a crew member of the Space Shuttle, (October 1998)? And not let’s forget about his tenure as Senator, (in my home state of Ohio!).

Before he went into space, NASA engineers wanted to make sure that a living creature could sustain the pressures of coming back into earth’s atmosphere. A chimpanzee by the name of Ham drew the short straw and went up into orbit in January 1961, before Mr. Glenn would get the opportunity in February of 1962. This drink is named after this event.

Happy Birthday, John Glenn!

Chimp in Orbit
1 1/2 oz. 151 proof Rum
1 oz. Sweet Vermouth
1/2 oz. Orange Curacao
Splash of Light Creme de Cacao
Splash of Grenadine
2 oz. Orange Juice
Juice from one Lemon

Method: Pour all ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously, then strain into a tall glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint.
