Deep Blue is May 11th Drink of the Day!!

After previously beating its predecessor the year before, current World Chess Champion Garry Kasparav would be invited back to play another six game match against IBM’s new “Deep Blue” supercomputer in 1997. This time, the computer won two matches, Kasparov one, and there would be three ties. Kasparov, feeling that IBM had cheated, demanded a rematch. However, the computer was dismantled shortly after the match.

To remember the day the computer outwitted human intelligence, (scary, heh?), I found a drink with the same name. Probably named for its color and not the supercomputer, it still sounded worth the print. Mr. Kasparov probably had something a little stronger after the match anyway.

Deep Blue Cocktail
1 1/2 oz. Vodka
1/2 oz. Blue Curacao
Champagne
Maraschino Cherry for Garnish

Method: Pour the vodka and blue curacao in a pint glass with ice. Stir to chill, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Top off with Champagne. Garnish by dropping a Maraschino Cherry into the drink.

Due to Government involvement, the strike would later be forced to discontinue and four union reps would be jailed for contempt.

1997 - IBM’s supercomputer, Deep Blue, defeated Garry Kasparov in a rematch between the World Champion of Chess vs. the computer, won 2 games to 1 win for Kasparov. There were three ties.
