Drink of the Day: Autumn Moon

Last month, I had the opportunity to test out some TOPO Organic Spirits. Located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, they are getting some very good feedback on their three spirits: Piedmont Gin, Vodka, and White Whiskey. They are originally known for their beers, which they have been microbrewing now for over 16 years. Now, they are venturing out and coming up with some award-winning spirits. The first one I wanted to try out was their organic gin .

With a subtle hint of juniper to go along with some other flavors which include cardamon, cucumber, and citrus, this organic wheat gin stands well on its own. However, I an not in the business of leaving things stand alone. With cucumber already being in the background of the gin, I wanted to enhance on that, linking the secondary ingredients with the gin foundation. Unlike most times I create a cocktail, where I force my videographer, Adam, to be my guinea pig, I was invited to the home of C.R. and Suzanne Morris. It is there that we came up with this beverage and had them be the judges on how it tasted. What an awesome set up they have at their place of residence. I wanted us to come up with the cocktails together, showing the viewers that it can be a collective effort. In the video, it looks like I have came up with the cocktail myself due to the magic of editing. But, I am here to tell you that C.R. and Suzanne had just as much in the creation as I did.

What we came up with is a nice and refreshing “up” cocktail which we have called the Autumn Moon. First, we muddle cucumber with St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur and Chambord to get the base flavors in place. Then we add the spirit to the mix, giving you a well rounded gin cocktail that will go perfect during cocktail hour. Not only will you enjoy the aroma of the drink before even tasting it - you will also enjoy the comments from your friends on it’s fabulous hue.

Today is Repeal Day, when the 21st Amendment to the Constitution was set in place, repealing Prohibition. If this isn’t an excuse to lift a glass for a joyous toast….

Enjoy your weekend, everyone! Here’s a nice little something for you to get it kicked off in the right fashion. Cheers!

Autumn Moon Cocktail

2 oz. TOPO Organic Piedmont Gin

1/2 oz. Chambord Raspberry Liqueur

1/2 oz. St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur

3 slices of cucumber (quartered)

Lemon Twist

Method: Place the quartered cucumber slices into a mixing glass along with the measured amounts of St. Germain and Chambord. Use a muddler to pulverized the cucumber to blend with the other two ingredients. Add gin to measure then add ice. Cap with a tin and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Take a peel of a lemon and twist it over the cocktail to allow the oils from the rind to disperse onto the drink. Rub the twist gently on the rim of the glass prior to dropping it into the drink.
