Drink of the Day: Continental Sour
Here’s one that dates back to the days when rye whiskey was the liquor of choice and when it wasn’t a bad idea to figure out ways to take the bite out of the liquor. A very unique cocktail; one that uses some ingredients that are rarely used in mixed drinks today. This is a great aperitif that, when done properly, will be a favorite with all of you whiskey imbibers out there. What you get as a final product is a very subtle and velvety beverage that makes a great sipper during cocktail hour.
I know that people are weary of using raw egg whites as an ingredient for a cocktail. However, it is its velvety characteristics that gives this cocktail it’s charm. Plus, with the way eggs are pasteurized today, one shouldn’t worry too much about it. Either you use this as an ingredient or not is your choice. The flavor will stay the same. You will just lose the texture of the drink if you decide not to.
I chose this as the Drink of the Day to give you a little break from the tiki beverages I have been showcasing here of late. I hope you find this a nice relaxer as you finish off your day. Cheers.
1 Egg White
2 oz. Rye Whiskey
1/2 oz. Tawny Port
1/2 oz. Simple Syrup
1 Large Wedge of Lemon
2 - 3 Dashes of Aromatic Bitters
Method: In a mixing glass, pour in all the ingredients except the bitters. Cap off with a tin and dry shake the ingredients, (dry shaking means without ice). Pour over ice in an old fashioned glass. Take a fresh lemon rind and twist it over the top of the cocktail, allowing the oils from the peel to disperse over the drink. Rub the twist gently on the rim of the glass before dropping it in. Add a couple dashes of bitters. Tamp the lemon rind down into the cocktail with a stir stick while stirring.
