Drink of the Day: The Delmonico
Happy Monday, everyone!
After the last two weeks of holiday spirit, and short weeks at the office, we are getting back into the norm. The first full week of 2015 is now underway. What better way to kick it off than with a pre-Prohibition cocktail? For you gin enthusiasts out there, this will surely be a hit with you.
This cocktail is named after the restaurant with the same name that was a popular spot in New York City at the turn of the 20th Century and until the Prohibition forced these types of restaurants to close when profits from liquor sales were depended upon. Luckily, bar recipe books have kept this signature cocktail alive and well. If you are into the craft cocktail movement, this is something you want to add to the dance card.
A gin and brandy combination, this cocktail is a perfect aperitif during the cocktail hour. A perfect blend of liquors that is rounded off nicely with the secondary ingredients. The aroma from the twist of lemon combines well with the bold flavor of this drink. Your senses will have a field day, with the aroma from the twist coming to your nose as you take your first sip.
Now that we are getting back to the norm, I wish you all a nice beginning to 2015. Have a great day and an even better week. Cheers!
Delmonico
1 1/2 oz. Gin
1/2 oz. Brandy
1/2 oz. Dry Vermouth
1/2 oz. Sweet Vermouth
2 - 3 Dashes of Angostura Aromatic Bitters
Method: Pour all ingredients, except the bitters, into a mixing glass with ice to measure. Cap with a tin and shake well. Strain into a nicely chilled cocktail glass. Take a peel of lemon and twist it over the cocktail to allow the oils from the rind to disperse nicely on top of the drink. Rub the twist gently on the rim of the glass before dropping into the cocktail. Add two to three dashes of bitters to the drink.
