Drink of the Day: Mojito
Let’s go into the weekend with a classic Cuban rum cocktail that, if made properly, is one of the most refreshing cocktails that you can make. To create one of these, you must understand the concept behind this cocktail, and most others that are considered classics today.
One thing that needs to be realized when making a Mojito is that there is a fine balance when it comes to putting the ingredients together. It doesn’t take much to make this too sweet, too sour or too minty. The ingredients must be distributed properly to give it the quenching effect it should have. This drink originated in Cuba. It is one of, if not the oldest cocktails in history. Ernest Hemingway is said to have loved this cocktail while spending his winters in Havana.
In the past few years, we have seen a resurgence of the classic cocktails, and this is surely getting a lot of airplay, and for good reason. Not many drinks can be as refreshing and as complete. This is a true gem of a beverage. I hope this Drink of the Day gets your weekend started down the right path.
A great Friday is in store! Here’s to a great tomorrow! Cheers!
1 oz. Simple Syrup
5 Mint Leaves
Juice from 3/4 of a Lime
1 1/2 oz. White Rum
Soda Water
Method: In a mixing glass, put in the first two ingredients. Cut a lime in quarters and squeeze three of the wedges in with those ingredients. Take a flat head muddler and gently muddle these ingredients together, being sure not to pulverize the mint leaves. Add ice. Add the rum to measure. Cap off with a shaker tin and shake well. Add ice to the finished glass which, in this case, is the highball glass. Add a couple fresh mint leaves to the new ice to use as a visual for the final creation. Strain the mixture into the highball glass filled with ice. Top off with soda water. Use a stir stick to stir and tamp down the new mint leaves. Use the fourth wedge of the lime as a garnish on the rim of the glass.
