Drink of the Day: Monk’s Coffee
For some of us, Christmas Day was just the beginning of a week’s worth of holiday cheer. With the New Year just a week away, bartenders like myself have been busy doing the holiday thing for the last few weeks now. We are now in the final stretch. Honestly, I am looking forward to a nice relaxing January. Well, not too much of a slow down, but a little bit of one would give me some time to refuel.
To get this week countdown to New Year’s Day started, I wanted to end Christmas evening off with a nice coffee beverage. I liked it so much I wanted to share it with you today. I know this is a coffee beverage, but it may be wise to wait until you are finishing off the day and maybe have this as an after-dinner treat.
I am assuming that this got its name due to most of the ingredients in this hot beverage are made by monks. No matter why, it is a very delicious and well-balanced drink that will put you in the right frame of mind.
One nice thing about this drink is that there are four equal parts of four cordials. In the video, I mention 1/4oz. to 1/2 oz. of each of these, saving enough room for coffee. No matter how much of each ingredient you use, which is completely up to you since you will be making it, just make sure you save enough room for coffee and that the end cocktail is well balanced.
Enjoy the rest of your long weekend. Cheers!
Monk’s Coffee
1/2 oz. Frangelico
1/2 oz. Creme de Cacao
1/2 oz. Amaretto
1/2 oz. Grand Marnier
Coffee
Whipped Cream
Method: In an Irish coffee mug, pour in the equal parts of the first four ingredients. Fill the mug with coffee, leaving about a half inch of space from the rim. Take two stir sticks and lay them on the rim of the glass to be used as support for the whipped cream. Hold one end of both stir sticks, creating a “V” on top of the mug with the straws. Put on the whipped cream.
