Drink of the Day: Continental Sour
Here’s a cocktail that has been around since at least the mid-1800’s and has been named many things. An excellent pre-Prohibition treat you can show off to your friends.
The Continental Sour was on many cocktail menus in New England back in it’s heyday and has been named several things. A social network friend of mine asked me to locate the recipe for this because he had a hard time finding it. I’m happy he did. It has become one of my favorite rye whiskey beverages.
The egg white in this cocktail is meant to give the drink a nice and frothy finish. If you feel uncomfortable using this ingredient, by all means leave it out. However, the presentation will be lost without it and I highly suggest you leaving it in.
Hope you have a great and productive day. After doing so, be sure to treat yourself with one of these lost treasures.
Cheers!
Continental Sour
2 oz. Rye Whiskey
1 Egg White
1/2 oz. Port
1/2 oz. Simple Syrup
Juice of 1/4 Lemon
3 Dashes of Aromatic Bitters
Method: In a mixing glass, combine everything but the bitters. Seal with a shaker tin, without ice. Be sure you have a nice seal. Dry shake the ingredients well. Pour into an old fashioned glass filled with ice. Add a few dashes of bitters. Take a twist of lemon and rub it gently on the rim of the glass before dropping it into the drink. Stir and serve.
