Drink of the Day: Lemon Drop Shooter
A good Saturday to all of you on this nice Spring morning. There is nothing like the sounds of all the birds flying over my house, bringing themselves back from the warmer climates of the South. This is always a good sign. This means we are very close to seeing some warmer weather ahead!
Talking about the new season….another sign of warmer weather is the enthusiasm of ordering rounds of shots at the bar. Last night, someone ordered a round of lemon drops for him and his friends. Unfortunately, when people order Lemon Drops today, they are a completely different shooter than what I originally made when getting into the business close to thirty years ago. However, if I was to make them the correct version, they would have no clue what it was and probably give it back thinking I was losing my mind. Today’s version consists of lemon flavored vodka, chilled and served with a lemon wedge with sugar on it.
YAWN!!!
Let me show you the right way to make this shooter. It will be a conversation piece at the party for sure. Plus, like yesterday’s cocktail, I am showing you another way of utilizing one of the most forgotten liqueurs behind the bar: Galliano.
Now, the one thing I do need to warn you about is that this is a flaming shot and that you must be careful when drinking these, being sure to distinguish the flame to, first, not ignite yourself and, second, giving it time to cool down so you don’t burn your lips. But, I ensure you when done properly, this will become one of your favorite shots to share with your friends.
I hope you enjoy today’s Drink of the Day. Cheers and enjoy your weekend!
The Original Lemon Drop Shooter
1 oz. Vodka
Splash of Galliano
Lemon Half Circle (be sure it is big enough to set on top of the shot glass.)
Sugar
151 Rum
Method: In a shot glass, pour in the vodka, filling about 3/4 of the way up. Add a splash of Galliano. Lay the half-circle of lemon on the shot glass. Pour some sugar on the lemon. Gently pour some 151 rum on top of the lemon with sugar. Ignite the lemon. Once the sugar caramelizes, blow out the flame. Let it set for about a minute to cool down. To drink, shoot take the lemon in and hold it with your thumb and index finger in one hand, while holding the shot in the other. Shoot down the shot, then suck on the lemon with the caramelized sugar.
This Day in History:
1871 - Journalist Henry Stanley began his trek to find missionary and explorer, David Livingstone.
1963 - After much scrutiny on the escape of three convicts, Alcatraz Prison on an island in San Francisco Bay closed.
1965 - Martin Luther King, Jr. led the start of a civil rights march in Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, Alabama.
2010 - In still what is questioned by many as an act that goes against the US Constitution, the House of Representatives passed a bill to over-haul the American healthcare system. The bill known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has raised the cost of health care to the point where most will be forced to depend on government assistance to afford, and be accepted for, health care.
