Drink of the Day: Mojito
Good morning! Hope you are finding ways to get out of the chores to enjoy your Saturday. Even if there are things for you to do, that you can’t seem to get yourself out of, I have a nice classic for you to prepare for yourself as a treat for all your hard work. This is a classic that dates back to the glory days of Cuba, when people from the United States would go down to get away and enjoy the warm and clear waters of this once tropical paradise. Ernest Hemingway was known for going down for months at a time to enjoy what this island nation had to offer. Especially when it came to the exotic and refreshing cocktails that are still popular today. One of those classics is what I will be showing you and introducing as the Drink of the Day: The Mojito.
There are many who tend to get carried away with ingredients when putting this cocktail together. Either they want to over do the lime. Or, they want to add an overabundance of sugar to sweeten up the drink some. The way I will be showing you today is the way you want to make it if you want to expose the wonderful back flavor of the rum, and introduce it to the other ingredients to give you a nicely rounded and refreshing beverage, perfect for these dog days of summer.
This is a perfect drink to showcase the fact that, when making a mixed drink, you should add ingredients that will compliment one another. Not taking away flavor from any ingredient; rather enhancing what each has to offer to the finished cocktail. If made properly, you will have yourself a very tasty, refreshing drink that makes a perfect sipper on a hot summer afternoon.
Enjoy each minute today, along with every sip. Hope your day is full of excitement and enchantment. Here’s a little something to help you along the way. A true island classic that never gets old. Cheers!
1 oz. Simple Syrup
10 Mint Leaves (5 for preparing the cocktail with. The other 5 will be used as dressing for the finished drink)
3/4 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
1 1/2 oz. White Rum
Soda Water
Method: Take five mint leaves and tear each of them just a little while placing them in a mixing glass. Add the simple syrup and lime juice. Take the flat end of a muddle and gently muddle the ingredients, making sure not to pulverize the leaves. Add ice and rum. Cap with a tin and shake well. Strain into a highball glass with ice. Add some mint leaves for decoration. Top with soda water. Garnish with a lime half-wheel on the rim of the glass.
