Drink of the Day: Snow Bird Cocktail
I had the opportunity to come up with a couple cocktails with some friends, at their home bar, back in the fall. We were doing this for a distillery and were trying out their line of spirits. When we came to the vodka, I put together a fresh fruit concoction that I am very much in the mood for today. A nice blend of ripe strawberries and pineapples, muddled into a mash, along with the vodka, then topped with ginger ale and a float of coconut rum. A perfect refresher when you are feeling the heat of the summer. When doing this back in the fall, it was nowhere near the temperature we are talking today and we were all wanting to have the feeling of a nice sandy beach while guzzling a few of these down. At that time we would had to have taken a plane to the south of us, like many of those lucky souls they call “snow birds’ do, when the weather starts to turn it’s ugly head toward winter. Hence, the name of this nice and fresh beverage!
I want to, once again, thank C.R. and Suzanne for being gracious hosts when Adam and I ventured over to their house to shoot the videos. And let’s also thank TOPO Spirits in North Carolina for allowing us to come up with some cocktails using their fine spirits.
If you are unable to get TOPO in your area, choose any vodka that you enjoy to put this together. I’m sure you will enjoy just as much.
Enjoy your Sunday. Take some time and put a couple of these together. What a great reward after doing some chores around the house, or a great conversation piece while make some for friends at a get-together. Be to be responsible and remember the liquor content while imbibing. There is much more in it than you can taste. Cheers!
1 1/2 oz. Vodka
2 - 3 Pineapple Chunks
2 Fresh Strawberries, quartered.
Ginger Ale
1/2 oz. Malibu Coconut Rum
Method: Pour the vodka in a mixing glass to measure. Add the pineapple chunks and quartered, de-leafed, strawberries to the mixing glass. Take the grooved part of the muddler and begin to pulverize these ingredients into a mash. Add ice. Cap with a tin and shake vigorously. Strain into a hurricane glass with ice. Top off to about an inch from the rim with ginger ale. Finish with a Malibu rum float. Garnish with a fresh strawberry on the rim of the glass.
