Drink of the Day: The Bourbon Fashionable

July 27, 2015 | By | Add a Comment

A good Monday morning to one and all! Time to hit the week on the right note with a little twist on an old classic; one I’m sure you will enjoy if you are a bourbon lover.

This is a spin on the Old Fashioned. Usually made with sugar, and muddled with bitters, orange and cherry, I have replaced the sugar with honey syrup, (4:1 water to honey ratio), to give it a more vibrant sweetness. I have also added some ginger ale to round out the cocktail a little more and to give you a more fashionable sipper to enjoy during the cocktail hour. So, instead of calling it the same thing, then bastardizing the standard, I have given it a name of its own altogether.

This cocktail, if made to measure, brings out the best that the bourbon has to offer. The charred oak smokiness and sweet corn really come out to give you whiskey enthusiasts out there something new to enjoy. Sometimes even those who like their whiskey neat or on the rocks appreciate something a little different from time to time. I hope I have created something for you that satisfies your tastes.

To me, it is important to enhance what you are drinking in regards to the spirit, not mask it’s characteristics. This cocktail is a great example of that. It takes away the bite, yet enhances the flavors the liquor has to offer. A true cocktail in that regard.

If you want to try something a little different, in place of the bourbon, try it with spiced rum instead. Either way, this is a very robust and flavored-filled beverage that is very easy to prepare, yet offers many layers of enjoyment as you take each sip.

I have added this to the signature cocktail list on the Twiisted Sushi Bar and Grill menu, the place where I am now employed. I have been given the freedom to create new cocktails for their menu and will be changing it frequently. If you are ever in the Medina, Ohio area, be sure to stop in and say hi.

Enjoy your work week. Cheers!
