Indian Summer Cocktail is February 24th Drink of the Day!

On this day, in 1835, “Siwinowe Kesibwe” (Shawnee Sun) was issued as the first Indian Language monthly publication in the US, and the first paper published in what is now Kansas (at the time, this part of the country was Indian Territory). The written alphabet was created by a Baptist missionary by the name of Johnston Lykins.

To honor this day, I introduce to you a colorful cocktail that will have you wishing for spring to arrive. As Benjamin Franklin used to say, “An apple a day will keep the doctor away”, you may want to make sure and have two.

Indian Summer Cocktail
1 1/2 oz. Rum
1 oz. Melon Liqueur
1/2 oz. Pineapple
1/2 oz. Orange Juice
1 tbsp. Dekuyper Pucker Blue Island Schnapps
Granny Apple Slice (Garnish)

Method: Pour everything but the Blue Island Schnapps into a shaker with ice. Shake well then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Take the Blue Island Schnapps and drizzle it down the sides of the cocktail glass, causing it to layer the inside of glass. Eventually, it will find its way to the bottom of the drink, leaving a nice design. Garnish with a slice of a Granny Green Apple.

This day in history:
1803 - In the case of Marbury v. Madison, the Supreme Court overturned a US law for the very first time. In layman’s terms, it backed up the Constitution stating that Congress could not overrule anything that was in it. The politicians of today need to look at this ruling, in my opinion.
1835 - “Siwinowe Kesibwi” (Shawnee Sun) was issued as the first Indian Language publication in the US.
1868 - The first US parade to use floats happened in Mobile, Alabama during Mardi Gras.
1980 - After beating the Russians the day before, the US Hockey miracle team won the Gold Medal by defeating Finland 4 - 2.

Notable Birthday:
George Harrison, former Beatle, was born on this day in 1943.

Notable Quote:
“Every man’s dream is to sink into the arms of a woman without falling into her hands.” - Jerry Lewis
