The Martini Milano is December 2nd Drink of the Day!!
I get asked frequently by people what types of cocktails they can make with obscure ingredients; things they hardly ever use except for those exceptional few who have acquired a taste for that particular liquor or liqueur. Here’s a great example of using one of these for today’s Drink of the Day.
Campari is an Italian aperitif that is considered a bitter liqueur. If you have ever had the opportunity to try this beverage, it is understandable why it has this distinction. I work in an environment where many types of cocktailers come in to whet their desires and like to try new things. Unfortunately, Campari isn’t a huge mover. So, when I found this cocktail, I gave it a try and was quite pleased with how this ingredient gave the rest of the drink its character. The white wine (I use Chardonnay) and dry vermouth used as the other secondaries to compliment this gin based cocktail really work well to round out this perfect social sipper.
For all of you home enthusiasts out there: There are no combinations out of bounds. In my opinion, if you like to have ketchup with your steak, you are the one eating it. Have at it! It all comes down to what you desire at the end of the day. Same goes with creating a beverage that you want to enjoy after a long day at work. My job here is to give you some obscure combinations that will give you some ideas of your own that you can hone in on until you find that perfect blend. With this drink, I have found it using these ingredients. I hope you find this to delight your taste buds. Enjoy!
1 1/2 oz. Gin
3/4 oz. White Wine (I used Chardonnay. If you feel a sweeter white wine would fit your tastes, use that)
3/4 oz. Dry Vermouth
1/2 oz. Campari
Method: In a mixing glass filled with ice, pour in the measured ingredients. Cap off with a tin and shake well until you see the frost on the tin. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Take an orange peal and twist it over the cocktail, allowing for the oils from the rind to disperse onto the cocktail. Rub the twist of orange lightly on the rim of the glass to give it a citrus aroma while sipping.
