The Mojito is December 27th Drink of the Day!!

December 27, 2013 | By | Add a Comment

This is a popular drink that has had a resurrection in the last several years that dates back even before its heyday back in Havana, Cuba in the 1920′s. When made properly, this is a well balanced cocktail that has a hint of mint flavor to go along with the lime and sugar. All these ingredients complement the main ingredient, rum. As I said in yesterday’s blog about using ingredients to complement and not mask the liquor, this cocktail was introduced to enhance the great attributes rum has to offer, not hide the flavor of it.

During Prohibition, the high society of the United States found refuge in Havana, Cuba, where many rum cocktails were made. Ernest Hemingway was one who would go down and frequent these establishments. In fact, this was one of his favorite cocktails. After you have an opportunity to taste one that has been prepared correctly, you will understand why.

A very light and refreshing beverage, this is one you can work at getting good at putting together for a few months before the summer months. That’s not saying you can’t enjoy a few before that happens! Cheers!mojito

Mojito

1 1/2 oz. White Rum

1 oz. Simple Syrup (1:1 Sugar to water)

Juice of 3/4 Lime

5 Mint Leaves

Soda Water

Method: In a mixing glass, pour in the measured amount of simple syrup. Take five mint leaves and put them in with the simple syrup. Squeeze in three large wedges of lime, which equates to 3/4 of a lime. Discard the lime wedges once you squeeze them in. Using a flat-head muddler, gently muddle these ingredients together being sure not to shred the leaves. Add ice to the mixing glass. Add the white rum to the mixture. Cap with a shaker tin and shake well. Strain into the finish glass filled with ice, which will be a highball. Add a few new mint leaves for show. Top off with soda water. Take the 1/4 of lime you did not use for the cocktail to garnish the side of the glass with. Tamp down the mint leaves to distribute in the drink. Enjoy!
