Planter’s Punch is February 25th Drink of the Day!!

February 25, 2014 | By | Add a Comment

This is the grandfather of all tiki bar drinks, dating back to the mid 1800s and originating in Jamaica. I have changed the recipe somewhat due to how I like it. I have taken out the Angostura Bitters in my cocktail, which to some may be somewhat wrong to do. So, for you novices out there, I will add this as an option to add. I also like to float the dark rum on the top of the finished mix and use white rum as a base instead of using just dark rum.

This cocktail was written about in a London, England magazine “Fun” in September, 1878. Even by that time, it was considered a classic island beverage. Though some credit a bartender in the South Carolina for this cocktail, there is significant enough proof that it was around for a long time before he and the bar even existed.

With Spring only being one month away, this is the perfect time to introduce the Planter’s Punch as the Drink of the Day. You have some time to master this and make it the way you want. As I always mention, when it comes to cocktails, they are wen to give you a foundation to work from and to give yourself ideas on how to make something of your own. With this cocktail and a little tweaking, you can find your own island oasis. Cheers!

Planter’s Punch (Shaun’s Recipe)

Splash of Grenadine

1/2 oz. Dark Rum

Method: In a mixing glass filled with ice, pour in the measured ingredients of everything but the dark rum. Cap with a tin and shake well. Strain into a hurricane glass filled with ice, leaving a 1/2″ at the top of the glass. Float dark rum on top of the cocktail. As an option, add a couple dashes of Angostura Bitters. Garnish with a lime and orange wedge on the rim of the glass.
