Satan’s Whiskers is April 28th Drink of the Day!!

Here’s a classic cocktail that was first introduced in Harry Craddock’s Savoy Cocktail Book in 1930. The drink I introduce to you is what Mr. Craddock called the “straight” Satan’s Whiskers. He also introduces changing the Grand Marnier to Curacao and calling it “curled” Satan’s Whisker’s. I prefer the straight, so I will introduce this version to you. A nice, well-balanced drink, made with gin, sweet vermouth, and dry vermouth as the main ingredients, and given support with the orange flavoring coming from three different sources: Grand Marnier (which I’ve already mentioned), orange juice, and orange bitters. I am assuming it gets its name for two reasons - 1) The color of this cocktail is a burnt orange, and 2) The volume of liquor in this cocktail is large in comparison to many cocktails, so you better be somewhat careful when consuming. Either way, it’s a great name and I am somewhat surprised it isn’t still common. The nice round flavor of this cocktail, when measured properly, is quaint and distinct. The vermouths tend to compliment the gin and smooth it out, while the orange flavor takes it to another level altogether. A very enjoyable drink!

Satan’s Whiskers

3/4 oz. Sweet Vermouth
