The Stormy Colada is April 1st Drink of the Day!!

Ginger beer has been making a serious comeback thanks to the craft cocktailers out there. Moscow Mules are selling at a record pace and Dark and Stormys have done well in recent years. This mixer is a hit with the “in” crowd and doesn’t look like it’s going to go away any time soon.

To find most of my Drinks of the Day, I search through the internet and bar books to give you cocktails I think are worthy of this title. We were having a conversation about the popularity of ginger beer when I found this gem. A great refresher, it adds a new element to the drink by adding juice to the mix. After tasting the final result, I am surprised we aren’t seeing more of these combinations out there. Yes, ginger beer can stand on its own as a mixer. But the added ingredient of pineapple juice really takes this cocktail to a new level.

One thing I do have to stress is that you want to use the non-alcohol version of the ginger beer when you make mixed drinks with it. The popularity of the alcohol version of this is growing. However, since this is a malt beverage, you have a high liquor content that can give you a double whammy you are not ready for. Just be responsible when putting one of these types of beverages together. At least find yourself a way home besides driving if you decide to go down this road. Either way, drink responsibly and enjoy! Cheers!

Stormy Colada

1 1/2 oz. White Rum

1 oz. Pineapple Juice

Ginger Beer

Wedge of Lime

Sprig of Mint for Garnish

Method: Build this in a highball glass filled with ice by first adding the first two ingredients to measure. Top off with ginger beer. Squeeze in a wedge of lime then drop the wedge into the drink. Tamp down the wedge while stirring. Garnish with a sprig of mint on top of the cocktail.
