Testing the rights of women voters during the Presidential election of 1872, Susan B. Anthony led a group of women to the poles in New York. On this day, she was fined $100 for this; a fine which she refused and would never pay. In the years prior and until her death in 1906, she was one of the leading forces of women’s rights in the United States. The Liberty Cocktail is June 17th Drink of the Day!!

After many years of political unrest and chaos in France, work for the Statue of Liberty got underway with the agreement that the United States would find the land and base to support the artwork. The statue is of the robed Roman goddess, Liberta, the goddess of freedom. The statue arrived in New York City on the French ship, Isere, on this day in 1885. It was a gift from the French people to the United States.
