The Aviation is February 4th Drink of the Day!

Charles Lindbergh, the aviator who is best known as the first to fly solo and non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean, was born in 1902 on this date. To celebrate this day, I’d like to introduce to you a cocktail that was invented before he took his first flight: The Aviation.

This classic cocktail was first made by Hugo Ennslin, the head bartender at Hotel Wallick in New York in the early 1900s. Hugo mentions it in his book, “Recipes for Mixed Drinks” (1916). The recipe I will be sharing with you is the original. However, the Creme de Violette, though very soothing with it’s fragrance and flavor, is very hard to find. Feel free to omit that from the recipe if you have a hard time finding it. Either way, you’ll enjoy it’s flavor.

This is another one of those “sour” drinks that were very popular at the turn of the twentieth century. You will like the sweet and sour complements to the gin.

The Aviation
1 1/2 oz. Gin (London Dry)
3/4 oz. Lemon Juice
1/4 oz. Maraschino Liqueur
1/4 oz. Creme de Violette

Method: Pour ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.

This day in history:
1789 - George Washington and John Adams were elected the first President and first Vice President of the United States.
1974 - Patricia Hearst, the granddaughter of newspaper mogul William R. Hearst, was kidnapped.
2003 - Yugoslavia became the loose federation of Serbia and Montenegro.
2004 - The Massachusetts Supreme Court declared gays had the right to marry.

Notable Birthday: Charles Lindbergh, the first person to fly solo and non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean, was born on this day in 1902.

Notable Quote: “Isn’t it strange that we talk least about the things we think about most?” - Charles Lindbergh
