Originally used as a prison to house Civil War prisoners in 1861, Alcatraz stayed a military prison until it was turned over to the Bureau of Prisons in 1933. For the next thirty years, the facility known famously as “the rock” would house the most dangerous criminals. It is said that noone ever escaped Alcatraz. However, three men who were never caught are said to have done it. This is still an open investigation this very day and will remain so until the youngest of the prisoners who escaped turns 100 years old. This escape happened in 1962. Due to the salt water from the bay badly deteriorating the buildings on the island, President Kennedy ordered the prison to be closed, on this day, in 1963. Today, over one million people yearly go to visit Alcatraz.

To commemorate the closing, I would like to introduce to you the Alcatraz Cocktail. Unlike the prison in its days of glory, this drink will give you the feeling of freedom with its fruity undertones and alcohol content. Enjoy it during a nice summer’s day while cooking out.

The Alcatraz
1 1/2 oz. Vodka
3/4 oz. Gin
Cranberry Juice
Grapefruit Juice
Dash of Grenadine

Method: Take a highball glass and rim it with salt. Fill the glass with ice. Pour the vodka and gin in. Top with equal parts of cranberry juice and grapefruit juice, saving enough room for the dash of grenadine. Stir and serve.
