Ms. Earhart had many accomplishments as an early aviator and had many firsts. To commemorate her solo flight she succeeded in on this day in 1935, it’s only justified that I would find a drink that would meet the feat. When I was searching through the web, I came across this recipe that looked good enough for that purpose. So good enough, in fact, that the drink was named after her!

Note: Some of the ingredients, especially the Creme De Violette, may not be easy to come by. Check your local liquor store for availability.

Amelia Earhart Cocktail

2 oz. Fresh Strawberry Puree
2 oz. Gin (london-dry)
2 Tsp. Maraschino Liqueur
1 Tsp. Creme de Violette
2 Tsp. Simple Syrup
Juice of half a lemon

Method:
Pour all contents into a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously then strain into a highball glass filled with ice. Garnish with a lemon twist.

On this day in history:
1935 - Amelia Earhart becomes the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California.
1949 - Snowfall is recorded in Los Angeles for the first time.
1964 - The first government report by US Surgeon General, Luther Terry, states the dangers of cigarette smoking.
1973 - The American League begins a three year trial period for the “Designated Hitter” rule.

Notable Birthday - Alexander Hamilton, 1st US Secretary of Treasury and the loser in the duel with Vice President Aaron Burr, was born in 1757. You will also see his face on the ten dollar bill.

Notable Quote - “Those who stand for nothing with fall for everything.” - Alexander Hamilton
