The world would lose one of the most prolific minds of its day on this date in 1566, when Nostradamus, (born Michel de Nostredame), would pass away in France. By the time he passed away, he was locally known as a healer, supposedly coming up with a “rose pill” that would protect you from the plague that had been taking many lives in Europe during the 1530s. His first wife and his two children were victims of this themselves. He was, and still is, known as a seer. His book Les Profities, (The Proficies), is the one we are commonly familiar with and is said to have predicted many long term proficies since its writings. However, most critics today state that the interpretations of his books are very loose and could mean anything.

Though some people saw his views as hocus-pocus and black magic, many of his peers in his day, including the Catholic Church and the French Royal Family took Nostradamus’ predictions in high regard. So much, in fact, that King Charles IX’s mother, Catherine made Nostradamus Counselor and Physician-in-Ordinary for her son.

One of Nostradamus’s predictions was that of Armageddon. I have found a cocktail that bears this name.

Armaageddon Cocktail
1/2 oz. Amaretto
1/2 oz. Peach Schnapps
1/2 oz. Raspberry Liqueur
Orange Juice
Cranberry Juice
Splash Lemon / Lime

Method: Pour in the liquor to measure quantities into a highball glass with ice. Fill to about a 1/2″ from the rim equal parts of Orange Juice and Cranberry Juice. Add a splash of lemon/lime soda to top off the drink. Stir and serve.

This day in History:
1566 - Nostradamus, French Astrologer, Visionary, and Physician, died.
1881 - President James Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau. He would die from complications stemming from this event on September 19.
1937 - Amelia Earhart and her co-pilot Fred Noonan disappeared over the Pacific while attemting to circumnavigate the globe.
2002 - Steve Fossett became the first to ever circumnavigate the globe in a ballon.

Notable Birthday:
Dave Thomas, Fast Food Entreprenuer and founder of Wendy’s, was born on this day in 1932.

Notable Quote:
“I think the harder you work, the more luck you have.” Dave Thomas
