The Automobile Cocktail is June 4th Drink of the Day!!
After two years of tinkering and adjusting, Henry Ford took his maiden voyage in his first car on June 4, 1896. Called the Quadricycle due to it having four bicycle tires, it’s what inspired Ford to begin production on other prototypes and eventually gave him the incentive to start the Ford Motor Company in 1903. He built this vehicle in his workshop located in his back yard in Detroit, MI.
To commemorate this day, I’m sharing a drink that was around in the 1930s. Writen in a couple cocktail books, this recipe originates from The Artistry of Mixing Drinks by Frank Meier (1936). With blending the flavors of scotch, genever and sweet vermouth, plus the introduction of the orange bitters, you find yourself with a suprisingly smooth combination you’ll be sure to try again. So, Mr. Ford, here’s a drink to celebrate your enginuity.
The Automotive Cocktail
3/4 oz. Blended Scotch
3/4 oz. Genever (Holland Gin)
3/4 oz. Sweet Vermouth
1 Dash Orange Bitters
Method: Pour all contents into a shaker with ice. Stir well to dilute and chill. Strain into cocktail glass.
