The third and final leg of the Triple Crown will be run today. Unfortunately, I’ll Have Another was scratched due to a freak knee injury and will not available to run for the chance to be the first triple crown winner since the 1970s. However, this doesn’t take away from the history of this race.

The Belmont Stakes is the oldest of the Triple Crown races. It originally was run at the Jerome Park Racetrack in the Bronx. It was run there until 1890, then would run at the Morris Park Racecourse until 1905, when Belmont Park opened for business and this race would find its permanent home.

There have been many changes to the music, the drink, and the tracks since the inaugeration of this race. The original song “Sidewalks of New York” to “New York, New York”, its change of racetracks that we mentioned previously, and now the drink. The Belmont Jewel is the third drink that has been given the honor of having the title, The Belmont Stakes Cocktail. The first being the White Carnation, the second The Belmont Breeze. Though you won’t be screaming “I’ll Have Another” to cheer on the horse, you will probably be doing it when ordering another one of these tasty cocktails!

Drew Revella, a Food and Beverage Account Manager with Centerplate, a vendor to Belmont Park, was the one who created this cocktail. This will be the first year this cocktail has been introduced.
