John “Bartholomew” Roberts, the most successful Pirate Captain during the Golden Age of Piracy, was born on this day in 1682. This Welsh Sailor didn’t originally begin his career on the high seas as a pirate. While working on a Welsh slave ship, pirates took over and took prisoners. The captain of the pirate ship took a liking to Mr. Roberts due to his navigational prowess and to the fact that he, himself, was Welsh. In 1719, in a majority vote from the crew of the ship, Roberts would become captain.

Unlike most pirates, Bartholomew Roberts was a very religious man and one who felt it his duty to steal from the more fortunate to give to the needy. He was also the first pirate to have Sunday Service on the ship for his crew.

His piracy only lasted for three years until his death in 1822 at the age of 39. Even though it was a short stay, he was able to amass 470 ship captures during his tenure. To honor the Caribbean “Black Bart”, I found a drink that will give you the feel of the islands themselves. To meet my tastes, I’ve added the lime juice to not only give it that much needed jolt of citrus, but to also add another ingredient common to rum drinks back in the days of piracy. So let us hoist our cups high and give a toast to the Robin Hood of the Caribbean!

Note: Black Bart is also the name of a drink that combines stout and cola.

Black Bart
7 Blackberries
1 oz. Brown Sugar Simple Syrup
Juice from 1/2 lime
1 1/2 oz. Whiskey
1 1/2 oz. Rum

Method: In a shaker glass, place the blackberries, simple syrup and lime juice, and muddle well. Add ice and alcohol to the muddled items. Shake vigorously. Strain into cocktail glass.

Another Note: Bartholomew did not drink. However, this did not hinder him from giving his crew their fair share of rum during thier voyages.

This day in history:
1792 - The New York Stock Exchange was established when a group of 24 brokers and merchants met by a tree on what is now Wall Street and signed what is known as the “Buttonwood Agreement”.
1875 - The first running of the Kentucky Derby took place at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY.
1987 - An Iraqi warplane attacked the USS Stark in the Persian Gulf, killing 37 sailors and injuring 62.
2004 - Same sex couples exchanged marriage vows for the first time in the United States in Massachusetts.

Notable Birthday:

An old pirate’s Toast:
“Though life is now pleasant and sweet to the sense, we’ll be damnably mouldy one hundred years hence.
