The Caesar is March 15th Drink of the Day!!

March 15, 2012 | By | Add a Comment

On this day, Ides of March, in 44BC, Julius Caesar was assassinated by a group of people to try to bring the old form of government back to Rome. However, this ended up backfiring. His death started many civil wars and even strengthened what he began, starting the Roman Empire.

To mark this man’s accomplishments, there are many things named for him. One of these things is a drink called “The Caesar”. Walter Chell, the manager at the Calgary Inn in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, was asked to come up with a signature drink for the new Italian Restaurant that was opening in the hotel back in 1969. What he came up with was a more spicy and robust version of the Bloody Mary, adding clam juice to the equation to give it a unique flavor. To this day, this is one of the more popular drinks served in Canada.

Like the Bloody Mary, variances of this drink are common when going from establishment to establishment. The common ingredients that should always be a part of this drink are vodka, Worchestire Sauce, Clamato Juice (Tomato Juice with Clam Juice), pepper and horseradish. The following recipe is my version.

The Caesar Cocktail
1 1/2 oz. Vodka
1/2 oz. Worchestire Sauce (don’t be shy with this ingredient)
1/2 tsp. Ground Black Pepper
1/2 tsp. Prepared Horseradish
1/2 tsp. Tricky Dix Mojo All-Spice
2 Dashes Tabasco Hot Sauce
Juice of 1/4 Lemon
Juice of 1/4 Lime
Clamato Juice
Two Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail (Garnish)

Method: Take a pint glass and rub a wedge of lime around the rim of the glass. Dip the rim into Tricky Dix Mojo. Set this glass aside. Take another pint glass and add the Worchestire sauce, pepper, horseradish, TrickyDix Mojo All-Spice, Tabasco. Squeeze the juice of the lime and lemon into the glass, being sure to discard the wedges after doing so. Add the vodka, then fill the glass with ice. Top off with clamato juice. Shake vigorously for about ten seconds. Dump the shaken drink into the rimmed pint glass. Garnish with shrimp cocktail.
