Calamity Jane was an entertainer who would tell tales of her antics in the wild west, while entertaining people with her bull riding, gun shooting, and cockiness. Though most of the stories she told were probably not true, she was very entertaining and would be invited through the Mid-West to show off her skills. She was born on this day in 1852.

Due to her excessive drinking, she died broke and alone at the age of 51 on June 1, 1903 in Terry, South Dakota. To remember the birthday of one of the last Wild West entertainers, I have found a drink that she would probably be fond of. Due to hitting you with some hard to find ingredients of late, I wanted to make this one very simple. A perfect drink for the end of a long day:

The Creamy Cowgirl
1 1/2 oz. Bailey’s Irish Cream
3/4 oz. Amaretto
Milk

Method: Build drink over ice in an Old Fashioned glass by pouring in the liquor, then topping off with milk. Stir and serve.

This day in history:
1707 - England and Scotland joined in the “Act of Union” to form Great Britain.
1931 - The Empire State Building opens as the World’s Tallest Building and would have that title for 41 years.
1941 - In what many would consider being the best film ever made, “Citizen Kane” premiers in New York City.
1991 - Two Major League Baseball feats took place on this day: Nolan Ryan pitched his seventh, and last, no-hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays. Also, Ricky Henderson broke Lou Brock’s stolen base record.
2009 - For the first time in 341 years, a woman was appointed as poet laureate of the United Kingdome. Carol Ann Duffy will take over the post from Andrew Motion.

Notable Birthday:
Martha Jane Canary, best known as entertainer Calamity Jane, was born on this day in 1852.

Notable Quote:
“If there hadn’t been women, we’d still be squatting in a cave eating raw meat, because we made civilization to impress our girlfriends.
