The Daiquiri is May 29th Drink of the Day!!
His assassination stunned a nation. Conspiracy Theorists are still not convinced of who killed him and books are written on his life to this day, almost forty years after he was gunned down while parading in a convertable in Dallas, Texas. The 35th President of the United States, John Fitzgerald “Jack” Kennedy, was born on this day in 1917.
JFK was the first President born in the 20th Century, a decorated Veteran of WWII, the second youngest President at 43 (first was Theodore Roosevelt), and still the only Catholic to hold the office. Before becoming president, Kennedy served as a congressman for the US House of Representatives, then was elected into the US Senate, both for the state of Massachusetts. He beat out Richard Nixon when running in the 1960 Presidential Election. His term would be shortened due to his assassination. Lee Harvey Oswalt was charged with the shooting, but did not see his day in court due to being assassinated himself by Jack Ruby while entering the Court House.
Some interesting things that happened while JFK was President: the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the building of the Berlin Wall, and the Space Race between Russia and the United States. To celebrate his day of birth and to celebrate his life, as short lived as it was, I’d like to share with you what the recipe for his favorite drink, the Daiquiri. This is the original lime daquiri, not one of those frozen concoctions people have become familiar with when its name is called out. Well worth a try and is good either up in a cocktail glass or on the rocks. Enjoy!
The Daiquiri
2 oz. Amber Rum
Juice of one Lime
1 tsp. Sugar or 1/2 oz. Simple Syrup (1:1 water to sugar ratio)
Method: Pour ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until frost forms on shaker tin. Either strain into a chilled cocktail glass with out ice or strain into an Old Fashioned glass filled with ice. Garnish with a slice of lime.
