The Duke Cocktail is June 3rd Drink of the Day!!
I had to find a drink for this part of history because it’s so interesting. Amazing how one event can change history. On June 3, 1937, the Duke of Windsor married Wallis Warfield. Now, if I was to leave it at that, it wouldn’t be that big of deal. Here’s the juicy part of this story; the Duke of Windsor was formerly the King of England, King Edward VIII. It was because of this wedding that he volunteered to give up the throne to his younger brother who would become King George VI. He died in 1952 and Queen Elizabeth II became Queen. She is now celebrating her 60th Anniversary as Queen. If King Edward would have stayed King, he would have stayed King until his death in 1972 and Queen Elizabeth II would never had become Queen, just a part of the Royal Family.
The reason for government disapproval of the marraige is due to the fact that Wallis Warfield had been divorced not once, but twice and was suing her second husband. Edward VIII was a successful royal and was popular with the citizens of Britain until the news broke out on the marriage. Instead of scarring the family name, he decided to let love take over and allow his younger brother to take over the throne. The now titled Duke of Windsor left England and lived in France for the remainder of his life with his bride. Wallis was not given a royal title and was not even welcome in England until 1967.
To match this part of forgotten history with a drink, I found an interesting cocktail for you to try. This is one of those that uses raw egg as an ingredient, so be sure to use a pasturized one if you decide to give it a try.
The Duke Cocktail
4 oz. Champagne or Sparkling Wine
1/2 oz. Triple Sec
1/2 tsp. Maraschino Cherry Juice (Originally calls for Maraschino Liqueur which is extremely hard to find.)
2 tsp Lemon Juice
1 Splash Orange Juice
One Egg
Method: Take all ingredients except the sparkling wine pour them into a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for ten seconds. Strain into a champagne flute. Top with champagne or sparkling wine. Stir and serve.
