Robert Bailey Thomas, the first owner and long-time editor of The Farmer’s Almanac, was born on this day in 1766. With his guiding hand, this publication was a huge success from the beginning, going from 3000 subscribers in its inaugaral year in 1792, to over 9000 its second year.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac, not to be mistaken for the Farmers’ Almanac est. in 1818, is North Americas oldest on-going periodical, starting publications during George Washington’s first term as President and still being published today.

To celebrate Mr. Bailey’s birthday, I found a cocktail that’s named after this successful yearly publication. I must tell you, if you’re a weak drinker, you may want to pass on this. The Loveless Cafe in Nashville, Tennessee is where I found this interesting recipe. From the original, due to my taste, I added sugar to my recipe.

Farmer’s Almanac Cocktail
2 oz. Moonshine
One Sprig of Fresh Basil
One Lime cut into wedges
1/4 cup diced Cucumbers
1 tsp. Sugar (optional)

Method: In an Old Fashioned glass, squeeze the limes and add to glass, along with the basil, cucumbers and sugar. Muddle until you see a good blend. Add moonshine and ice. Cap the glass with a shaker and shake vigorously. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a sprig of basil.
