May 18, 2012 | By | Add a Comment

Mount St. Helens, dormant for 123 years, erupted on this day in 1980, killing over fifty people and causing well over $3 billlion in damages. The eruption took much of the mountain with it and caused a smoking plume that could be seen from miles away. Prior to the eruption, the summit of Mount St. Helens was 9,677 ft. Now, the top of the volcano has a horseshoe shaped crater from the eruption and the summit at its highest stands at 8,365 ft. The volcano is part of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire that has over 160 active volcanos.

In remembrance of this day, I’d like to introduce you to a drink that was very popular in tiki bars in the 50s and 60s, primarily in Hawaii, and will sure to have some heads turning when your enjoying one. This cocktail should be drank with another person. So, be sure to find a friend to enjoy this exotic and refreshing drink. Just be sure to stay away from the flame by getting a couple extra long straws.

Flaming Volcano

1 oz. Brandy
4 oz. Orange Juice
2 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice (Unsweetened)
2 oz. Almond Flavored Syrup
1 oz. 151 Rum
2 Scoops of Crushed Ice
Drinking vessel for this drink is a Volcano Bowl. It is typically glass or ceramic, with a volcanic cone in the center and a 2″ - 3″ deep moat surrounding it.

Method: Pour contents, except the 151 rum, into a blender with the crushed ice until its smooth. Pour around the cone in the moat area. Pour the 151 rum in the cone of the volcano bowl and ignite using a long sticked match. Serve with two straws.
