The Glass Jaw Cocktail is February 7th Drink of the Day
John L. Sullivan was the last heavyweight champion to win a bout where the boxing was barefisted. He beat Paddy Ryan on this day in 1882. He was also considered the first to hold the title of Champion of North America. The only fight he ever lost was to Gentleman Jim Corbet in 1892.
Mr. Sullivan was the first athlete to be seen as an icon and also the first to make over a million dollars. However, when he died at the age of 59 due to health reasons stemming from fighting and over indulging at the bars, he had only ten dollars to his name.
To commemorate this man, I would like to introduce you to “The Glass Jaw”. This drink was found in an article in the Washington Post on March 10, 2010. It calls for John L. Sullivan Irish Whiskey, but any Irish Whiskey will do.
The Glass Jaw Cocktail
2 oz. Irish Whiskey
1 oz. White Vermouth (not to be mistaken for dry vermouth)
Juice of one lemon
1/4 oz. Simple syrup (Simple syrup is 1:1 water and sugar dissolved over heat)
Soda Water
Mint Sprig (Garnish)
Method: Pour everything but the soda into a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain contents into a highball glass filled with ice. Top with soda. Garnish with a mint sprig.
