This drink was invented at the Old-Waldorf Astoria and is named after one of the most fluential newspaper figures in the 20th century. William Randolph Hearst, with the aide of his mother Phoebe, bgan building his newspaper empire that would span eighteen cities and would eventually grow to magazines. He would have on the payroll some of the most popular writers of his day, including Jack London and Mark Twain. In it’s prime, Hearst owned newspapers would have over twenty million readers daily. He was also into politics, where he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1903 - 1907.

He was born on this day in 1863. To celebrate this day, I’d like to introduce this drink to you. As is the Martini, Manhattan, or any other drink where the main ingredients are alcohol, you want to enjoy the flavor of what’s in it. They, by no means, are looking to mask the wonderful flavors of the gin, but only giving it more layers with the other ingredients. I, myself, like the boldness with hints of bitters coming through ever-so slightly. Enjoy!

Hearst Cocktail
2 oz. Gin (London Dry, but preferrably Plymouth if you can get your hands on it)
1 oz. Sweet Vermouth

Dash Angostura Bitters

Method: Pour all contents into shaker with ice. Shake well, then strain into a cocktail glass.
