The Bloody Mary is January 1st Drink of the Day!!

Like the old saying goes, “Fight fire with fire!”, sometimes having a little of the dog that bit you the day after will get you back on your feet and make you feel like your old self again. With the Bloody Mary, you are not only doing this, you are also replenishing your body with the nutrients it needs after you’ve done your part in depleting it of them the night before.

The Bloody Mary was first created in Paris, France, by a French bartender named Fernand “Pete” Petiot at Harry’s New York Bar way back in 1921. Mr. Petiot would end up coming over to the United States and work at the famous St. Regis in New York City. Due to complaints from his new clientele of this drink being somewhat bland, he spiced it up a bit and renamed it “The Red Snapper”. This, as all of us know, would only be a temporary change.

Though the recipe of this drink still has the foundation of vodka, tomato juice, pepper, hot sauce, and Worchester Sauce, the recipe today changes depending on the bar and the bartender.

The following recipe is what I currently have at my bar:

Shaun the Bartender’s Bloody Mary

1 1/2 oz. Vodka

1 oz. Worchester Sauce
1/2 tsp. Prepared Horseradish
1/2 tsp. Black Pepper
1/2 tsp. Tricky Dix Mojo Spice (In place of Garlic Salt)
Two - Three Dashes of Tabasco (depending on your heat tolerence)
Juice of half lemon
Juice of half lime
Tomato Juice

Method: Prior to adding ice, add everything but the tomato juice into a pint glass. Stir contents together using a bar spoon. Add ice and fill remainder of glass up with tomato juice to about 1/4 in. from the rim. Take your tin and cap glass to shake vigorously. Take a second pint glass, preferably chilled, and rim the glass with a lime to wet the edge of the glass. Dip the glass into Tricky Dix Mojo for a nice and spicy rimmer for your Bloody Mary. Pour the contents of the first pint glass into the rimmed pint glass, being careful not to disturb the rim. Garnish are abundant for this drink. My favorites are: lime, lemon, celery, bleu cheese stuffed olives, dill pickle.

Amazing how this all-spice in place of the garlic salt rounds out this drink! Just found this stuff a year ago! If you want to find out more to get your hands on some of this stuff, check out their site at www.trickydixmojo.com.

Happy New Year!
