The Jazz Cocktail is April 25th Drink of the Day!!
All Ella Fitzgerald wanted to do when entering the Apollo Theater Amateur Night, in November 1934, was dance. Her life passion growing up was to become a professional dancer. But due to a dance act that preceding her, making her feel not up to par, she decided to sing in front of the audience. She won and received $25…and the rest is history. Within a year, she was a regular with Chick Webb’s Orchestra. After his death in 1939, the band would be renamed “Ella and her Famous Orchestra” and they would play together until 1942. Ella then began her solo career.
Ms. Fitzgerald, known also as “First Lady of Song”, “Queen of Jazz”, and “Lady Ella”, was born on this day in 1917. She would wow the audience with her “horn-like” voice and stage presence for over fifty years. For her birthday, I have found a drink that’s named for the music that she sang. Happy Birthday, Ella!
