The Louisiana Purchase is April 30th Drink of the Day!!

In what is considered to many as the biggest acquisition of land by the United States, today celebrates the date that the Louisiana Purchase was finalized. 828,000 square miles of land was bought from the French. This would take care of many issues. At the time, it was a win - win for the French and the US.

This deal came about due to the French being financially strapped for cash. Napoleon Bonaparte had been involved in many wars and it was putting thier country in financial trouble. Plus, due to wanting to concentrate their efforts more on the European front and not having too good a foot-hold in the Americas, the French felt it was time to consolidate. The United States not only saw this as a way to connect the east coast to the west coast with this deal, it gave them a strong port in the South in New Orleans.

The land bought in this deal consists of what we see today as all or part of fifteen states and two Canadian Providences. 23% of today Continental US was involved in this transaction.

I found a drink that is named after this big day in history. A well rounded drink with a citrus edge, this drink is well worth hunting down the ingredients for. Cheers!
