The Lusitania Cocktail is May 7th Drink of the Day!!
At the beginning of the 20th Century, if you had the biggest fleet and the fastest ships, you owned the waterways. This would explain the reasoning for Germany to begin it’s submarine attack on the bigger fleets during WWI. But, what the Germans on did on this day in 1915 was inhumane and would bring the United States into the war. The British Ocean Liner, Lusitania was sunk by a German submarine after being spotted and even identified by a German U-Boat eleven miles off the coast of Ireland. The ship sank in eighteen minutes and 1198 of the 1959 passengers were killed. When news spread, it was what put the rest of the world against the Germans and what would end up being their demise.
To remember the day that probably turned the tides of this war, I would like to introduce a drink I found that bears the name of that Ocean Liner.
The Lusitania Cocktail
1 1/2 oz. Dry Vermouth
3/4 oz. Cognac
1 Dash Pastis (this is France’s replacement liqueur for Absinthe when woodworm, a major ingredient of absinthe, became illegal. If you cannot find Pastis, replace this with absinthe.)
2 Dashes Orange Bitters
Method: Pour ingredients into a shaker glass. Stir well with a bar spoon, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Hey there Shaun! Made this cocktail on May 12th , 2014 so missed the actual anniversary! A very elegant spicy aperitif , amounting to more than the sum of its parts , as all great cocktails should do! It accompanied rich and creamy mushroom duxelles on croutes ( the fruitiness in the cocktail picking up on the hints of PX sherry used to spike the duxelles mix.
Happy you enjoyed and thanks for sharing your experience! A great cocktail should compliment what you are having. Nothing better than a great pairing of good drink and outstanding food.
