The MacArthur Cocktail is April 11th Drink of the Day!!
On this day, in 1951, while the Truman Administration was going through UN peace talks with Korea and China, General MacArthur felt it would be of better interest for the US to stretch the fighting into China from Korea. In fact, MacArthur sent out a message to his troops that went against the policies set forth from the administration. This gave Truman no choice but to dismiss MacArthur of his duties.
I don’t know if this drink was made in honor of General MacArthur. It won’t matter much to you after you try it where the name comes from. I was surprised at the not-too-sweet flavor and the smoothness of this cocktail. This drink was invented by Oscar Haimo, the Head Barman for many years at the Hotel Pierre in New York City. He was also the author of a yearly bar guide entitled, “Cocktail and Wine Digest: The Barmen’s Bible”, which was privately published from 1943 to at least 1964.
You’ll enjoy the nice flavor this drink has to offer. It’s strong enough to have the flavor of the rums throughout, yet easy enough for the people who only rarely embibe an opportunity to enjoy it’s flavor.
The MacArthur Cocktail
1 1/2 oz. Light Rum
Two Splashes of Dark Rum
3/4 oz. Triple Sec (Cointreau, in my opinion is better but not necessary).
Juice of 1/2 lime
1 Egg White
Method: Put ingredients into a shaker filled half way with crushed ice. Shake vigorously for at least ten seconds. Strain into a cocktail glass.
