The Muddy River is June 22nd Drink of the Day!!
Living in Northeast Ohio, I get ribbed on the river fire that happened in the late 1960s on occasion. If you don’t know about this, the Cuyahoga River at one time was considered one of the most polluted waterways in the world. It was so polluted that it would catch on fire on occasion. The one that would spark the environment water clean-up was on this date in 1969. This fire wasn’t even the biggest this river had seen. Yet, Time Magazine made it a big story and would cause an international uproar.
River pollution was so bad that there were no fish living in it from the mouth of the river connecting it to Lake Erie to 100 miles south. Today, thanks to the efforts of the Clean Water Act and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, there are 44 species now thriving in this part of the river. The most pollution the river now sees is due to urban run-off. The Cuyahoga River runs right through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
Today, you can go enjoy a beautiful walk through this forest filled area, enjoying the many types of wildlife this part of the country has to offer. I am now proud to say that I live in the area of some of the most inspiring natural views this country has to offer. I couldn’t have said that 40 years ago.
