The Nightingale Cocktail is May 12th Drink of the Day!!
Those who were tended to by her felt she was sent from the heavens. What she did to better the conditions for those she nursed back to health during the war could be considered sainthood. Her hygiene standards and other practices changed the way nurses performed their duties and gave them more responsibilities. On this day, in 1820, we were blessed to have Florence Nightingale come into the world.
An English nurse called the “Lady with the Lamp” due to her tending to her patients during her nightly rounds, Ms. Nightingale was instrumental in cleaning up the temporary hospitals that were set up during wartime. It was said that the wounded were dying more of infections than of their wounds due to bad hygiene. It is believed that with her concentrating on that alone brought the death toll down from 42% to 2% with people that would receive treatment in the hospital.
Today is International Nurse’s Day, celebrated on her birthday. To this day, new nurses take the Nightingale Pledge when graduating nursing school. Her school of nursing, which was established by her in 1860, is still active today.
To celebrate this unselfish individual’s day of birth, I introduce something that may not be as sweet as the above individual mentioned, but isn’t far off.
Nightingale Cocktail
1 1/2 oz. Banana Liqueur
3/4 oz. Blue Curacao
1 oz. Cream
One Egg White (Optional)
Method: Pour ingredients into shaker with crushed ice. Shake vigorously, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Note: Egg white will give this drink a silky body and a frothy finish. Not putting it in the drink, for the fear of eating raw egg will not change the flavor, only the body of the drink.
