The Oh, Henry! Cocktail is April 8th Drink of the Day!!
Henry “Hank” Aaron accomplished a feat on this day that many felt would never be able to be achieved. He broke Babe Ruth’s lifetime homerun mark by hitting career number 715 off Los Angeles Dodger Al Downing. He would go on to hit 755 home runs and is to this day, considered by many, still the home run king. Barry Bonds, who would eclipse his mark, is considered a cheater by many due to the steroid era. This will be a debate that will go on for decades.
Aaron carries a few more records worth noting. As much as everyone talks about the home run record, these others he carries will be very difficult to achieve: Total bases (6,856), Lifetime RBIs (2,297), Consecutive seasons with at least 150 hits (17), career extra base hits (1,477).
To celebrate breaking Ruth’s record on this day, I found a drink in the Savoy Cocktail Book by Henry Craddock in 1933. This drink was actually invented by a gentleman by the name of Henry Oretel. Mr. Craddock felt it noteworthy to mention this in his book. I have also found a rendition of this from Erik Ellestad. I have tweeked it to my taste and what I feel would meet common tastes.
Oh Henry! Cocktail
1 1/2 oz. Scotch Whiskey
1/2 oz. Benedictine
Ginger Beer
Orange Slice (Garnish)
Method: Build drink in a highball glass with ice, by adding the two liquors, then topping off with ginger ale. Take the orange slice, twist it over the glass, then rub rind on the rim of the glass, dropping it into the glass after doing so.
