Considered by many as one of the best American Short Story writers in the history of our country, William Sydney Porter had a dark side. Working in the occupation of bank telling to make enough money for him and his family, Porter’s bank was audited and he was found to have embezzled money. He would spend three years in the Ohio State Penatentary for his crime.

Better known under the pen-name O. Henry, some of his best works were done while on the run in Honderas and while serving time in prison. In fact, he would send all of his writings to a friend, so he could mail them to his publishers so they would be unaware of him being a prisoner. Today, one of the most prized annual awards given for short stories is named after him, “The O. Henry Award”.

On this day, in 1901, he was released from prison. To mark this date, I have found a drink that is close to his pen name. An excuse to get away from the fruity, rum concoctions that I’ve been introducing in masses of late, I wanted to steer more with a whiskey beverage that one can enjoy slowly and socially.

The O’Henry Cocktail
1 1/2 oz. Kentucky Bourbon
3/4 oz. Benedictine D.O.M.
Ginger Ale

Method: Pour the bourbon and Benedictine D.O.M. into a high-ball glass filled with ice. Top off with Ginger Ale. Stir and serve.
