The “Original” and current-day Hurricane Cocktail are July 6th Drinks of the Day!!

To be honest, I have never really been a fan of this cocktail due to its overly sweet flavor. However, I’ve been asked to make this the drink of the day, so I began doing some research to find the “original” recipe for this New Orleans’ classic cocktail. I’m happy I did. I’m amazed that they changed from the original recipe. A simple, yet refreshing cocktail was born at Pat O’Brian’s in the 1940s. It has since changed to a premix that Pat O’Brian’s is now known for.

I found a great blog by Chuck Taggart, who gives both the original and current day recipes. Chuck is a writer of cocktails and cuisine in the New Orleans’ area. You can check out his stuff at www.looka.thegumbopages.com. I got my information from a blog he wrote on May 8, 2010.

One of the ingredients, the Passion Fruit Syrup, can be very hard to find locally. You can buy it on-line @ www.auntylilikoi.com or do some searching for some local distributors.

The “Original” Hurricane Cocktail
(Adapted by Jeff Berry in his book, “Beachbum Berry Remixed”)
2 oz. Dark Rum
1 oz. Passion Fruit Syrup
Juice from one Lemon

Method: Place ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake until a frost forms on the shaker tin. Strain into a double Old Fashioned glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with an orange slice and cherry put on a cocktail spear, (known in this industry as a “flag” garnish).

Note: Mr. Taggart suggests using lime instead of lemon juice as his preferrence.

The “Current-Day” Hurricane Recipe
Adapted by Gary “Raz” Reagan in his book, “The Joy of Mixology”.
1 1/2 oz. Light Rum
1 1/2 oz. Dark Rum
Juice from one Orange
Juice from one Lemon or one Lime (your preferrence)
2 oz. Passion Fruit Syrup
1 Tsp. Real Pomegranite Grenadine

Method: Place all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake until frost forms on the shaker tin. Strain into a daiquiri glass filled with crushed ice. For garnish, spear an orange slice and cherry.
